Expert recommends Regulations on Virtual casino gambling
/ 17. May 2006
An expert on cyber law spoke out at a summit in Montreal yesterday on the regulations of virtual casino gambling.

Lawrence Lessig a Stanford Law Professor and founder of the university's center for Internet and Society, told the 1600 delegates at the conference that there is an increasing demand to bring the web into check concerning virtual casino gambling. As things stand now the online gambling industry is at liberty to play by its own rules but this is set to change in the future.

Due to the cultivation of 'Spam' and child pornography some governments are taking a tough stance towards the unregulated industries such as virtual casino gambling in an attempt to gain control of the internet badlands.

The U.S. Government is pondering on two bills that will make it almost impossible for American citizens to partake in virtual casino gambling in any form. In the current climate it is impossible to enforce, but the major players in computer technology are developing a device that will require identity on the web - In effect to work like a passport. What you do on the web will depend on where you come from. It is believed that within five years cyber space will have borders and boundaries as countries do and therefore national laws will apply.

Currently most of the virtual casino gambling outfits run their businesses from save havens out of the reach of North America's jurisdiction, from places such as the Caribbean, The Channel Islands and Gibraltar. This is where the problem lies and why the obstacle is difficult to get around.

Virtual casino gambling has become a booming business worth about $12 billion. It is believed between 25 and 30 million gamblers bet online.

The industry has seen this regulation coming for a while and many believe that it will not be the free ride for the virtual casino gambling companies that it has been.

In contradiction, many experts believe regulations can work for everybody, creating a fairer environment for Bookmakers and Racetracks owners who are losing business to the internet and will also bring in massive revenue in taxes.
